May Newsletter

We reach out to you today with heavy hearts. May typically brings a renewed sense of energy to our communities—flowers bloom, neighborhoods grow busier, and families spend more time outdoors reconnecting with friends and neighbors. Behind that everyday sense of normalcy are the police officers and firefighters who serve our communities with quiet dedication every day. Yesterday, we were painfully reminded of that reality with the tragic line-of-duty loss of Kevin Trainor, age 30. Our hearts are with his loved ones, fellow troopers, and the entire Massachusetts State Police community. With the support of our members, our commitment to the families of fallen heroes begins immediately after tragedy strikes—and continues for a lifetime. As the Trainor family navigates unimaginable grief in the days ahead, we stand ready to honor his sacrifice and, when they are ready, provide the long-term circle of support and community they deserve. Please know that as an active member of the Hundred Club, you are an essential part of that promise. As you read this month’s newsletter, we hope you are reminded not only of the beauty of this season, but also of the extraordinary sacrifices made every day to keep our communities safe.
With gratitude,
Tracie A. Hines
Executive Director

Our community was devastated by the recent line-of-duty death of Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor (age 30 years old).  As Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble noted yesterday,

“Make no mistake: Trooper Trainor saved lives this morning. His courage – his commitment to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth and put his life on the line – prevented an even greater tragedy. He will be remembered as a hero.”

Please keep Trooper Trainor’s fiancée, family, and the entire Massachusetts State Police community in your thoughts and prayers. Thanks to your support as members, the Trainor family will be embraced by the Hundred Club of Massachusetts community and receive the care and support they deserve in the difficult days ahead.

The Hundred Club of Massachusetts has stood beside Kegi Fontanez and her family since 2020, following the line-of-duty loss of her husband, Jose Fontanez, a 29-year veteran of the Boston Police Department.  Over the years, we’ve remained connected, because our commitment to our families is not just in a moment, but for a lifetime.

Recently, Kegi and her family faced another heartbreaking challenge with a devastating fire in their Wrentham home. Thankfully, none of the family members were injured, but they lost two beloved pets and all their belongings. In times like these, the importance of community becomes even more clear. We were there for them then, and we are here for them today.

If you would also like to support the Fontanez family directly, a Go Fund Me has been set up by to help them get through the immediate aftermath:

We believe in keeping our promise to stand with our families through the joyful moments as well as the most challenging. As a member, you are standing right beside us – and the families we serve.

James McDonald (“Jimmy Mac”) brings exactly 40 years, 6 months, 19 days and 16 hours of dedicated service with the Lynn Fire Department to his volunteer role as Fire Service Liaison for the Hundred Club of Massachusetts.  Beginning his career in 1977 on Ladder One and retiring as Fire Chief in 2018, he built a reputation for steady leadership, deep respect for the fire service, and a strong commitment to those he served alongside.

Chief McDonald’s experience, relationships, and understanding of the fire service community will further strengthen our mission and impact.  His lifelong dedication to the job will help amplify our work and deepen our connection to departments across the Commonwealth.  We are honored that he has chosen to give back to those who have lost a loved one in service by serving with the Hundred Club, and we are proud to welcome him into this key volunteer role. He has already brought meaningful insight, input, credibility, and impact to the Hundred Club family.

Police and Fire Fridays continue to be one of the most meaningful ways the Hundred Club of Massachusetts connects with the fire and police community across the Commonwealth.  These visits offer an opportunity to spend time with active-duty police officers and firefighters, express our gratitude, and reinforce the mission of the Hundred Club to stand beside them and their families.  This past month we visited departments in Natick and North Reading.  A special thank you to Dunkin for your ongoing support and to Wellpoint for sponsoring this initiative.  Thank you.

We are grateful for one of our longest and strongest partnerships – with the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts (PFFM). Last month, Executive Director Tracie Hines had the honor of presenting a plaque to President Richard MacKinnon, Jr., and Billy Cabral, Secretary-Treasurer, recognizing the strength and significance of our ongoing partnership.

Massachusetts Major Cities Chief of Police

Thank you to the Massachusetts Major City Chiefs.  Their partnership reflects a shared dedication to honoring and supporting the families of fallen active-duty police officers and firefighters across the Commonwealth.  Thank you for your support.

Some partnerships are built over time while others are woven into a family’s story.  For Jon Franciose, third-generation owner of Town Line Liquors in Natick, supporting the Hundred Club of Massachusetts is more than a commitment.  It is legacy.

That legacy dates back to his grandfather, Anthony Franciose, who was presented with a plaque by Norman Knight, founder of the Hundred Club of Massachusetts.  It was a meaningful moment that reflected a shared belief in standing beside those who serve and protect.  Decades later, that same belief continues to guide the Franciose family.

Today, Town Line Liquors  remains a proud supporter of the Hundred Club, both as a business member and as an engaged community partner.  In many ways, the Franciose family represents what the Hundred Club is all about: commitment, continuity, and community. Their story is a reminder that when support is passed down through generations, its impact only grows stronger.
