April Newsletter

April is often a month of renewal—a time when longer days and fresh beginnings remind us of what matters most. At the Hundred Club of Massachusetts, that sense of renewal is reflected in the relationships we continue to build, and the mission we carry forward each day.

Last month, we had the opportunity to connect with police officers and firefighters across the Commonwealth, strengthening the bonds that are at the heart of our work.  Each visit, conversation, and shared moment reinforces our commitment to the families we serve. Spending time with these dedicated men and women in the midst of their work reinforces the very purpose of our organization.  As we move into the warmer months ahead, we remain grateful for the support of our members, the dedication of those who serve, and the trust placed in us to stand beside their families.

April reminds us that while seasons change, our mission does not.

Wishing you all a safe, healthy, and happy Spring!

With gratitude,
Tracie A. Hines
Executive Director

Officer Mel Ligon, Ashland

Thank you,

Sometimes the most meaningful moments don’t come from carefully planned agendas or big announcements, they come from simply showing up.

When the Hundred Club of Massachusetts partnered with Wellpoint to launch Police and Fire Fridays, the goal was simple: visit local departments, introduce who we are, and say thank you. No expectations, just appreciation.

During our first visit to Ashland, that intention became something more.  As we gathered with members of the fire and police departments, Chief Rossi shared the story of Officer Mel Ligon, who is currently battling cancer.  Despite the challenges, including traveling to Texas for treatment, Officer Ligon continues to serve his community with strength and dedication.

In that moment, the room shifted. Moved by the story, David Morales of Wellpoint immediately committed to a monetary donation to support Officer Ligon’s family and help offset travel costs.  There was no formal ask, just a genuine response to a powerful moment.

Officer Ligon shared that he was “truly humbled by the generous donation and the outpouring of support,” and we are grateful that, after treatment, he is feeling “back to his old Mel self.”

Police and Fire Fridays began as a way to say thank you.  Today, in addition to thanking our police and firefighters, we would like to also thank Wellpoint for their partnership and dedication to those who serve.

When people come together with open hearts, meaningful support follows.

And sometimes, all it takes is being in the room.

At the Hundred Club of Massachusetts, our commitment extends beyond remembrance.  We are dedicated to supporting the children of fallen active-duty police officers and firefighters as they grow, learn, and pursue their passions.

Through our support for personal enrichment activities for surviving children, we encourage the exploration of interests, confidence building, and the same experiences of joy and discovery as their peers – despite their loss.  This type of support is a reflection of our promise: to stand beside these families not just in times of loss, but in the years that follow.

Thanks to the generosity of our members and supporters, we’ve been able to support a wide range of activities.  Ella and Addison have been able to pursue their love of the arts through singing and dance classes.  Ava took to the court with tennis lessons, while John had the opportunity to attend a football practice camp.  Morgan was able to enjoy the creativity and expression found in dance.

Each of these experiences represents more than just an activity; they are moments of growth, confidence, and normalcy that every child deserves.  Thank you for helping to make these special moments happen for children who have lost a parent in service.
