Pittsfield Firefighter Thomas "Todd" Lange was performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on a patient on February 5, 1978. The patient vomited directly into Firefighter Lange's mouth during treatment. The fire department was notified by the hospital that the patient was a hepatitis carrier. Firefighter Lange was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in 1997 and retired as a result of his disease in 2006. He died on May 20, 2011 and his death certificate listed the cause of death as Hepatitis C due to cirrhosis due to metastatic hepatocellular disease.
